Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has made it mandatory for operators towing trailers (including RVs) with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 4600 Kg (10,000 lbs) or greater to possess a Class 1 restricted license. The restriction permits the individual to operate a two-axle vehicle towing a trailer in excess of 4600 kg (10,000 lbs) and also may allow full learners status in Class 1 (optional). Because these changes will affect a great number of you, we are providing clarification of these new regulations.

In order to obtain the Class 1G necessary for operation of the vehicle combination, the individual must meet the following requirements:

Must successfully pass written tests for class 5, signs, and a twenty question multiple choice exam pertaining to classes 1 to 4.
Submit a SGI medical showing the person is in good health.
Undergo a SGI vision test at the SGI test office.
Perform a satisfactory vehicle inspection.
Demonstrate competence in the operation of the vehicle/trailer combination in the city and on the highway as per SGI Road test.

Written tests, SGI medical clearance and vision testing must be completed before the learner's endorsement can be issued. In order to receive driver training for the Class 1G license, all participants must be in possession of the learner's endorsement.

To help the operator in preparing for the SGI requirements, the training division of the Saskatchewan Trucking Association is currently offering a one-day program. This program is a one day (eight hour) session that combines classroom, vehicle inspection requirements, electric brake demonstration, hook up and unhook procedures and the road evaluation.

A group of interested participants will attend classroom presentations and various demonstrations and will be evaluated on their driving skills by qualified driving instructors. The participant supplies the equipment necessary for the evaluations and also co-ordinates with SGI to be tested at a later date.
